What a topic! I can hear your responses already; “That’s not what I do”, “What about this, and What about that”. Every sentence I write almost creates another story. So here we go …

Being a trucking safety professional means so many different things to those of us who work in this industry. Some, maybe even most, spend a lot of their time focusing on the traditional Safety & Compliance tasks mainly linked to the national safety code. Others have more of a fleet safety focus, and then there are a small number of places that have made the transition to developing a more integrated safety management system that just treats safety as an integral part of all the other business functions.

No matter which of these categories we fall into, and which of the many common job titles we might have been given, keeping our people and the public safe by ensuring compliance with various legislation features in our daily lives more frequently than even we realize at times.

In an industry where margins are low, and competition is high, the ‘safety person’ is often a one-stop-shop, which makes for long and diverse days where you never really truly switch off. Kind of ironic really, given the function.

No two days are ever the same and commonly re-occurring issues could include the use of seatbelts, incorrect lifting techniques, fatigued staff, PPE violations and shortcuts in loading/unloading and load securement.

Typical OHS activities involve a lot of contact with drivers, warehouse operators, and fleet maintenance staff, who are usually under pressure to get the job done as quickly as possible by others who are in turn also just trying to do their job. Dispatchers saying “Just get it delivered”, warehouse managers saying “We have to get it done before the end of the day to avoid charges” and fleet managers saying “The driver is waiting and I don’t have another truck”.

Picking your battles is very important but more important is the way you communicate. Being known by your name and not your title (‘the safety person’) is usually a good indicator of where you are at in terms of your relationship with others.

I remember many a time when daily tasks seemed never-ending, and no matter how early I started or how late I finished, the days just seemed to get longer and longer, and the weeks just seemed to become a blur. The weekends … just another day.

Of course, there may be the odd person who is fortunate enough to work in an organization where the equipment and people are not operating in a 24/7/365 environment. If that’s you, then good on you.

For most of us this is just part of the job and our satisfaction is drawn from the fact that we are constructively helping to keep our people, our resources, and the public out of harm’s way.

Being a safety professional in the trucking industry can be extremely challenging, and sometimes a thankless job, so it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But for those of us who make a career out of it, this job can provide a lot of happiness and satisfaction.

ਸਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਉਦਯੋਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਟਰੱਕ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਪੇਸ਼ੇਵਰ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਕਈ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੁਝ, ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ, ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਸਮਾਂ ਪਰੰਪਰਾਗਤ ਮੁੱਖ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਕੇਂਦ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਬਿਤਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਫਲੀਟ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ‘ਤੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸਥਾਨ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਏਕੀਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਨ ਸਿਸਟਮ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਵੱਲ ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰੀ ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ਦਾ ਏਕੀਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਾਗ ਵਜੋਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਭਾਵੇਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਈਏ, ਅਤੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਦੇ ਅਹੁਦੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਮ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਨਾਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਕਾਨੂੰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਜਨਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਸਾਡੀ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੰਨੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਵਾਰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸਦਾ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

ਅਜਿਹੇ ਉਦਯੋਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮਾਰਜਿਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਹੈ, ‘ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ’ ਅਕਸਰ ਇੱਕ ਵਨ ਸਟਾਪ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸਦਾ ਦਿਨ ਇੰਨਾ ਲੰਬਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਵਿਧ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਆਰਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ। ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਹੈ।

ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਦੋ ਦਿਨ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਮ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਸੀਟਬੈਲਟਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ, ਚੁੱਕਣ ਦੀਆਂ ਗਲਤ ਤਕਨੀਕਾਂ, ਥੱਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਟਾਫ, PPE ਦੀਆਂ ਉਲੰਘਣਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਡ ਕਰਨ/ਉਤਾਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਡ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਰਟਕੱਟ।

ਆਮ OHS ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਡ੍ਰਾਈਵਰਾਂ, ਵੇਅਰਹਾਊਸ ਆਪਰੇਟਰਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਫਲੀਟ ਦੇ ਸਾਂਭ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਸਟਾਫ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਜਿੰਨਾ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਦਬਾਅ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਖੁਦ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਡਿਸਪੈਚਰ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ “ਬਸ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਡਿਲੀਵਰ ਕਰ ਦਿਓ”, ਵੇਅਰਹਾਊਸ ਮੈਨੇਜਰ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ “ਖਰਚਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ” ਅਤੇ ਫਲੀਟ ਮੈਨੇਜਰ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ “ਡ੍ਰਾਈਵਰ ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਟਰੱਕ ਨਹੀ ਹੈ”।

ਆਪਣੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਚੁਣਨਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਉਹ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ। ਆਪਣੇ ਅਹੁਦੇ (‘ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ’) ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਲਕਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਚੰਗਾ ਸੰਕੇਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਦੇ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਖੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋ।

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਦੇ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ, ਅਤੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਮੈਂ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਜਲਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕਰਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਦੇਰ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਖਤਮ ਕਰਾਂ, ਦਿਨ ਲੰਬਾ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹਫਤਾ ਧੁੰਦਲਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਵੀਕਏਂਡ … ਬਸ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਦਿਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਬੇਸ਼ਕ, ਇੱਕ-ਦੋ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸੰਗਠਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਪਕਰਣ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਕ 24/7/365 ਮਾਹੌਲ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੇ ਉਹ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ।

ਸਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਲਈ, ਇਹ ਬਸ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਤੋਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ, ਆਪਣੇ ਵਸੀਲਿਆਂ, ਅਤੇ ਜਨਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਰਚਨਾਤਮਕ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ।

ਟਰੱਕਿੰਗ ਉਦਯੋਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਪੇਸ਼ੇਵਰ ਬਣਨਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਚੁਣੌਤੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ-ਕਦੇ ਨਾਸ਼ੁਕਰਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਹਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਸਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਰੀਅਰ ਬਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
