Safety and Health Week Is the Perfect Time to Start the Conversation
From May 4–9, 2026, workplaces across Canada will recognize Safety and Health Week, an annual opportunity to focus on preventing injury and illness at work, at home, and in the community. National partners describe the week as a chance for employers, workers, and communities to renew their commitment to safer and healthier workplaces.
For employers, that makes this week more than just a date on the calendar. It is a practical opportunity to step back, reconnect with workers, and start meaningful conversations about occupational health and safety. In many workplaces, safety can become routine. Policies exist, procedures are in place, and toolbox talks happen as needed. But Safety and Health Week is a reminder that strong safety cultures are built through ongoing attention, communication, and engagement.
One of the best ways to use the week is to make safety visible. That could mean holding a safety stand-down, sharing a daily safety topic, asking workers to identify hazards in their work area, recognizing safe work practices, or encouraging supervisors to check in with teams about what is working and what needs improvement. Small actions can open the door to bigger conversations, especially when workers feel their input is being heard and valued.
It is also an ideal time to increase employee engagement. When workers are invited to participate in safety activities rather than simply receive instructions, they are more likely to take ownership of health and safety in the workplace. Employers can use the week to run friendly safety challenges, host a lunch-and-learn, review emergency procedures, spotlight joint health and safety committee members, or ask staff to share ideas for improving workplace safety. The goal is not to create extra work. It is to create momentum.
