If you’re in the labour force and between 55 and 64, you’re in good company – there are more than 350,000 mature workers in BC! In fact, mature workers are a growing component of the workforce, expected to outpace the number of new job entrants over the next several years.
This is no surprise. Roughly 30 percent of Canadians are “baby boomers” (born 1946–1965). The average age of a Canadian is 40.8 years. The trucking workforce is aging at a higher rate than in other industries. According to the Canadian Trucking Alliance, the average age of a truck driver in Canada is 49—seven years older than the average worker.
Employers consistently find older workers experienced, dependable, responsible, and productive. Retaining these workers tomorrow will depend on management practices today! This presentation will explore the benefits and requirements of attracting, hiring, and retaining older workers.
